Physician Bio:

Samuel B. Barone, MD is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon. After graduating from The Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, he served as a physician in the US Air Force providing primary care to the members of the flying community, often in remote and austere locations such as the deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan. He then completed an ophthalmology residency at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary where he served as Chief Resident, and a vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at University of California San Diego.

He also has interests in clinical drug development and spent 5 years at the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rising to the level of Senior Medical Officer. He continues to hold leadership and a consultative position in biopharma industry leveraging his experience planning, executing, and managing clinical and translational activities across a broad range of indications along the drug development pathway. He joined Plessen Ophthalmology to serve the local community in 2019.

Why did you become an ophthalmologist? There is an incredible amount of personal reward in being able to protect and restore the gift of sight.
Favorite part of practicing in the USVI? My favorite part of practicing in the USVI is the people I meet and how appreciative they are of the care I deliver.
How do you spend your free time away from the office? During my free time I enjoy fitness, spending time with my family, and a good movie.
Do you have any pets? We have a miniature golden doodle named Jovie .
